This collection comes 'from my neck of the woods'... carrying not only memories of places but fragrances, faces and the feeling of the warm sun on my skin. Tatreez Embroidery is very important to the identity of the Bedouin and Palestinian culture, over 3000 years old - handed down from mother to daughter. Each region and clan has their own distinctive colors, patterns and style of embroidery - a particular stitch. Colors are derived from dyes from berries and flowers; others are pure silk threads from Lebanon and Syria.
Motifs range from traditional geometric designs that are found on mosque walls, or rugs and tiles that adorn the mosques as well as traditional flower clusters. As an Israeli I have had the honor of seeing first hand the intricate hand work of these fine embroidered robes that are adorned most proudly by the Bedouin and Palestinian women of the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem the Negev and the Sinai Desert. Embroideries for this collection are purchased through a variety of non-profit organizations that try to promote the financial independence of the women in and from that region. Vintage embroidery can be found in the old markets of Jerusalem and down in Be'er-Sheva. We purchase used garments from their owners, restoring them here in San Diego, and with great pride giving them life again. There is great energy in a handmade piece that travels through many hands and over many continents.
